AIDS in Ethiopia Online Database

ADDIS ABABA — An online database (www.etharc.org/aidsineth) with detailed information extracted from AIDS in Ethiopia 5th Report is launched by AIDS Resource Center (ARC). The online database is organized to enable users to easily access information on HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia that are filtered by region, period, residence, age, and gender.

The database was made available online with guidance and financial support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through a new five-year cooperative agreement. The CDC-funded AIDS Resource Center aims to increase and improve access to quality HIV/AIDS information in Ethiopia. The online database was made possible through collaboration with the Ministry of Health, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office, and CDC-Ethiopia. The AIDS Resource Center is part of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs (CCP).

The new database developed by the ARC is an easy-to-use web based system employed to make basic HIV/AIDS indicators for Ethiopia widely accessible to health professionals, researchers and the public at large. 29 sets of indicators are featured in this database categorized under: key HIV indicators; prevalence and incidence; additional HIV indicators; orphans and HIV infected population distribution by five year age groups. This database system features a series of dropdown selection request forms. The forms are easy to use by selecting users’ choice of indicator, specifying the criteria from the dropdown options and then submit the form to be processed. Depending on the connection and the number of rows requested, the results of the query are usually returned within seconds. A help page is also available on how to use the system.

PDF versions of AIDS in Ethiopia including Technical Documentation and Fact-sheets publications are available for download. The PDF format requires Adobe Acrobat Reader that can be downloaded freely from www.adobe.com. There are also charts on selected indicators for the nation and each region showing curves from 1982 through 2008.
